If you’re searching for a new iPhone charger, you’ll notice terms like “USB-C to USB-A” and “USB-A to Lightning” listed on product pages and packaging—but their meaning isn’t always clear. Whether you’re new to the iPhone line or purchased a refurbished phone without a charging cable, here’s a guide to finding the right match for our device.

Below, we’ll walk you through a simple guide to identifying USB-A to USB-C and other iPhone-compatible connectors. Keep reading to learn more about how the iPhone chargers from our VIBRANCE™ Collection can revitalize your phone battery and express your personal style!

Why Does It Matter Which iPhone Charger You Use?

So, why can’t you just run into the nearest Walmart and grab any phone charger in stock? Well, depending on your iPhone model, there’s a good chance that it won’t fit your device’s charging port.

As many longtime iPhone users know, Apple used to design phones with a brand-specific charger called a Lightning connector. If you needed to charge your phone at a friend's house, but they were an Android user, their old micro-USB cable wasn’t going to do the job.

While Apple has since switched to a more universal USB-C charger, not everyone can afford the latest phone upgrade. If you have an iPhone 14 or lower, your device requires a Lightning-compatible charging cable and block. If your device is newer, you’re working with a USB-C port. Let’s break these down below.

Types of iPhone Charging Cables

Nowadays, there are three main types of iPhone charging cables on the market (the short-lived 30-pin connector went out with the “Belieber” era). These include:

  • USB-C to USB-C: USB-C is the most common phone charger on the market today. In 2023, Apple, Google, Samsung, and other major cell phone manufacturers were required to transition to a USB-C charging port for every new phone release. You can use these chargers interchangeably across most smartphone brands.
  • USB-C to Lightning: To bridge the gap between older iPhone users and current charger availability, the Lightning to USB-C cable allows you to charge iPhones 5-14 with a USB-C charging head. This lets users plug their phone into newer laptops, car chargers, and other modern power cubes.
  • USB-A to Lightning: The classic iPhone charger we all know and love. These cables come with a Lightning connector, compatible with iPhone series 5-14, and a USB-A end that plugs into standard charging blocks, laptops, PCs, and other USB-A ports.

Here’s how you can identify the right connector for your iPhone:

Lightning Connector: A flat, thin, reversible connector with 8 pins (lines) down both sides

USB-C Connector: A flat, smooth, reversible connector with a hollow oval-shaped end

USB-A Connector: A rectangular, one-sided connector with two small hollow squares on the face and a line down the middle
